The Absence of Miss Marianne Herholdt Chapter 4 - Denial

It was the very same day that he had returned to the front door of Ms. Caroline's residence. The ride back through the countryside had gone by for him like a blur. The curtain was not completely drawn this time, so his mind was allowed to wonder, slightly. Not enough to draw his thoughts away from his Lady Marianne.
It was a few moments after he knocked on the door, notably with somewhat more vigor than his norm, that the maid came to the door looking quite flustered.
"I thought you'd come here Master, Miss Caroline said so. I'm sorry, Master, but she's gone. She left something for you." She pulled a letter from her dress and handed it to him. "I'm awfully sorry, Master." He had taken the letter briskly and turned away quickly as she said this, returning with a brisk walk to his own home, having already dismissed Jacob's man upon his return.
His room was cold now, the fire left alone that morning, and no other source of warmth. He didn't bother to change or build a fire before opening the letter. Though he did light a lamp on his desk which he sat by to read the letter.

Mister Brennan,

I cannot continue to be dishonest with my leaving on such short music. I don't want you to continue believing that I have done anything with the intention of harming you or the Lady Marianne. There is only so much that I can tell you at this time. But I will disclose what I can.

Firstly, I want to confirm for you the fact that I have, as you may have discovered already, I am indeed connected to the disappearance of Lady Marianne. I was informed that you went to the home of the Langridges this morning, and am certain you have been informed of my having gone there previously with the lady. My reasons for having wanted that hidden will be disclosed in time, but certainly not with this particular letter.

Secondly, I wanted you to know this is done with the Lady's safety in mind. This too, will be explained in time. I fear that I cannot tell you at the moment, as I know your inquisitive nature.

I must implore you not to investigate any further. For both the Lady's sake, and your own. I regret that there is little more I can tell you in the time that have to write, or the time that I have to make my next move. You will know everything in time, I hope. Only when things are resolved.

Sincerely yours,

Lady Caroline

Upon completion of the letter, he tossed it down on the table, cursing under his breath although none were around to hear him. "What could she mean? For both mine and the Lady's sake? What does she know that I don't?" He leaned forward onto the desk and put his head in his hands, deep in thought. He leaned back again, and closed his eyes, head tilted up to the ceiling. He didn't even really know what to think, but still he thought. His first guess was that they had left, both of them, for London. With this, he couldn't be sure. He picked up the letter and read it over again. Unable to find any secret meaning, or any hidden codes. He felt that he couldn't try to pursue them, or either one of them, for that matter. Everything that he had been doing to investigate her disappearance had come to a halt. What could he do?
Sorry it's short. Will be made up for soon, with Magic!
